i-adjective predicate

grammar

9 sentences

An i-adjective (ending in い) used as a complete predicate without a copula. Plain form ends the sentence directly (眠い 'I'm sleepy', 寒い 'it's cold'); polite form adds です (眠いです). Japanese i-adjectives conjugate for tense and politeness on their own (忙しい → 忙しかった → 忙しくない); they don't need だ/です for grammaticality, though です is added for polite register. Distinct from na-adjectives, which take a copula in predicate position.
