Japanese death vocabulary

Japanese has multiple registers for talking about death, sorted by directness and respect: 死ぬ (direct, neutral), 亡くなる (gentle, polite), 息を引き取る (poetic, peaceful death), 永眠する (formal, eternal sleep), 大往生する (passing peacefully at old age). Choice of word reflects cultural attitudes toward death and the speaker's respect for the deceased.
