The cultural weight placed on being on time in Japan — schools, trains, workplaces, and social life all treat punctuality as a baseline expectation. Trains famously run on time to within seconds; many workplaces and schools effectively require arriving early; even small lateness can be tracked, recorded, and judged. Setting one's clock a few minutes fast is a common self-management trick.
