雉も鳴かずば打たれまい (proverb: silence is safety)

A classic Japanese proverb (ことわざ): 'if the pheasant hadn't cried, it wouldn't have been shot'. Used to advise that silence is sometimes the safest course — speaking up unnecessarily can bring trouble.
