~までに vs ~まで (by vs until)

The deadline particle までに contrasts with the continuous-endpoint particle まで. までに marks a deadline by which something must be done; まで marks an endpoint until which a state or action continues. Both derive from まで; pairing them is the classic way to teach the distinction.
