Japan groups numbers in units of four digits rather than three — 万 (ten-thousand), 億 (hundred-million), 兆 (trillion). Where English breaks 10,000 as 'ten thousand,' Japanese treats 一万 as a single basic unit. This affects how large numbers are read and parsed.
