One of the most culturally loaded words in everyday Japanese: 世間体 (せけんてい), literally 'the world's body,' meaning one's appearance and reputation in the eyes of others. The traditional concern with 世間体 — 'what will people think?' — is woven into Japanese decisions about marriage, career, family conflict, and social conduct.
