~ますように (I hope/may it be)

The wish/prayer ending ~ますように, 'I hope that X / may it be that X.' Used for earnest hopes: 合格しますように ('I hope I pass'), 風邪をひきませんように ('I hope you don't catch a cold'). Common on tanzaku (wish papers) and at shrine prayers.
