negation scope (embedded vs matrix)
syntax4 sentences
Japanese typically scopes negation differently from English in reported thought. With と思う, Japanese can either negate the embedded clause (来ないと思う 'I think [she] doesn't come') or negate the matrix verb (家にいると思いません 'I don't think she's home'); English usually raises the negation to the matrix verb regardless. A classic translator stumble in either direction.
