~のだが (softening trail-off)

The sentence-ender のだが combining explanatory のだ with softening/contrastive が — leaves the sentence open-ended and invites the listener to fill in the next move. Uses include making an implicit request, setting up a contrast, or expressing a wish/regret that trails off: 行きたいのだが… ('I'd like to go, but…'). Formal/written counterpart of ~んだけど.
