The Japanese pattern XはYが + predicate, where the は-marked element ('big subject') sets the topic frame and the が-marked element ('small subject') is the actual grammatical subject of the predicate. Used to ascribe a quality, body-part attribute, ability, preference, or possession to the topic: 象は鼻が長い ('elephants have long trunks'), 彼女は頭がいい ('she's smart'), 私はりんごが好き ('I like apples'), 山田さんはお金がある ('Yamada has money'). One of the structural hallmarks of Japanese.
