giving/receiving verbs (授受表現)
grammar159 sentences
The system of three verb groups marking direction of giving in Japanese: あげる/くれる (give, distinguished by direction relative to in-group) and もらう (receive). The same logic extends to benefactive auxiliaries ~てあげる, ~てくれる, ~てもらう. One of the trickiest grammatical systems for English-speaking learners because English doesn't morphologically encode in-group direction.
