The sentence-final particle か turns a statement into a yes/no or wh-question. Attaches to the sentence-final predicate. In polite speech it's obligatory; in casual speech, rising intonation alone often replaces it. In embedded clauses it nominalizes the question: 大丈夫か聞く ('ask whether someone is okay').
