~てもいい (permission)

grammar

46 sentences

The permission form [verb te-form]+(も)いい(です) — 'it's okay to do X, you may X'. Literally 'even if you do X, it's good'. The も is optional: with it, the concessive flavor is more explicit ('even-if'); without it (~ていい), the same permission reading still holds. The formal/written variant uses よい instead of いい (~てもよい / ~てよい). All four surface forms carry the same grammar. Negative counterpart: ~てはいけない ('must not').
